Knights are second at Riddell Bank Tourney

Sunday, April 11, 2010

Times Staff Report

The Northview Knights opened their 2010 golf season under nearly perfect conditions as sunny skies prevailed at Forest Park Golf Course for the Riddell National Bank Northview Invitational on Saturday.

Terre Haute South got a first-place finish from Thomas Goss, who shot an 18-hole score of 67 and the Braves won the team title with a score of 292.

Goss' four-under-par score included a score of 30 on the front nine, which broke the previous record of 31 held by Tyler Akers, Chad Penman and Kade Baker. Goss was also just two strokes away from South Vermillion's Dustin Jovanovich, who carded a 65.

The Knights finished second as a team with a 303 as Drew Snyder shot a 74 to finish third overall.

"Overall I was very pleased," Northview coach Scott Buell said. "I wanted us to shoot under 310 and we shot a 303. Anytime you can get four scores in the 70's you're pretty happy."

Josh Hoskins scored a 75 for the Knights and was tied for fourth with both Daniel Eaglin and Ryan Turner shooting a 77.

"I was really happy with Josh Hoskins," Buell said. "That was a big score for us and that was really his first big tournament."

Brad Smith rounded out the Knights with a 93.

Terre Haute South's scoring effort was aided by Shelby Stewart's second-place score of 73 with Jackson Jarvis tying with Hoskins at 75. Cory Gertz was seventh with a 77.

Greencastle would have finished as the third-place team, but a player was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard. The Tiger Cubs then finished sixth behind third-place Linton (319), Terre Haute North (322) and Turkey Run (323). Sullivan was seventh ahead of South Vermillion, Cloverdale, Edgewood, Clay City and West Vigo.

The Eels shot a team score of 383 and was led by Austin Sinders' 89 followed by a 95 from Darius Farmer, a 99 from Koby Rhodes and a 100 from both Nick Johnson and Colton Dyer.

The Knights get another shot at Terre Haute South on Wednesday when they visit the Braves while Clay City travels to face Rockville on Tuesday.
