My name is Toni Carter and I am running for the office of Clay County Council, District 3.

District 3 covers Posey, Jackson and Sugar Ridge Townships.

My husband Shawn and I have been married for almost 20 years and we have three children. Taylor, 15, is a freshman at Northview High School. Brent, 12, is in sixth-grade at North Clay and Jack, 8, is a third-grader at Jackson Township Elementary.

When we are not attending our kids' activities, we enjoy swimming, hiking the trails in our local state parks and being outside. Brett and I are certified scuba divers and we enjoy doing that together while on vacation.

I was co-valedictorian of Northview High School in its first year of existence in 1985, coming from Van Buren High School. I then attended Indiana State University, where I graduated with a B.S. degree in Finance. I have been a financial advisor for Edward Jones investments in Brazil for more than 19 years. I serve as a mentor and trainer to other advisors and am on the hiring team for the firm, doing personal interviews for new prospective advisors.

I have been a past board member/member of VNA/Hospice of the Wabash Valley, Brazil Rotary Club and the Clay County YMCA. I am currently on the board of the Clay County Chamber of Commerce; active on the Program and Government Affairs committees, as well as a member of Delta Theta Tau Sorority, Indiana Farm Bureau, Clay County YMCA, and the newly found Brazil Main Street, Inc., group, which is hoping to secure streetscape designs and beautification to the downtown area after the U.S. 40 project is completed.

I have had an interest in politics for many years. Everything happening in Washington, D.C., affects everything we do in society.

I believe at the local level, the commissioners are working very hard to bring economic development to the area, which will in turn, produce jobs.

From talking with our local government officials and the economic development people in place to help our community, good things are in the works. But, unfortunately, it takes time.

The council's main purpose is to handle the finances of the county. I believe that I have the experience to help in that matter and can bring to the table a fresh perspective.

I have lived in Clay County all of my life and I want to see it grow and prosper.

Our county has a lot of opportunity that has not been realized.

I believe that I can help and that is why I would ask the people in District 3 for their vote for me in the primary in May and the general election in November.
