Three Northview High School students were recently selected to represent Clay County at Hoosier Girls State.

The three students were selected by the American Legion Auxiliary Unit Post No. 2 and include:

* Elizabeth Emmert, Brazil, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jeffery Emmert,

Emily Durcholz
* Emily Durcholz, Brazil, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Durcholz, and

* Caroline Disney, Brazil, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Disney.

The trio were invited to attend the 69th Hoosier Girls State, which will take place June 20-26, at Indiana State University.

Emmert, Durcholz and Disney -- all NHS juniors -- will join approximately 650 other young women for the government program designed to educate leaders of tomorrow in the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of citizenship. The session of government and practical politics is non-partisan and non-political.

Those attending begin their week-long adventure by registering to vote, where they receive an assignment to a mythical political party, which at registration time, has no political organization or party beliefs/platforms -- all established by the delegates within three days into the session.

Delegates must also file for an elected office on the city, county or state level. The students then conduct their political campaign complete with speeches and campaign materials. Once elected to office, delegates are sworn in and perform the duties as described for the position.

Non-elected delegates are given appointments as well as encouraged to visit the offices of those elected to communicate their needs as citizens.
