Legislator, surgeon to face off in 8th District

Tuesday, May 4, 2010

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) -- Republicans have picked a heart surgeon to face a Democratic state legislator for southwestern Indiana's 8th District seat being vacated by Democrat Brad Ellsworth, who is running for the Senate.

State Rep. Trent Van Haaften of Mount Vernon was unopposed for the Democratic nomination.

Larry Bucshon of Newburgh defeated seven other Republicans on the primary ballot. He was backed by national Republicans but narrowly defeated Kristi Risk of Spencer, who was supported by many tea party activists.

Ellsworth was considered a strong favorite for re-election before deciding to seek the Senate seat being vacated by Democrat Evan Bayh.
