North Clay track and field teams are WIC champs

The North Clay boys' track and field team scored a Western Indiana Conference victory on Saturday, scoring 135 points to top second-place Edgewood.

ELLETSVILLE -- The North Clay track and field teams returned from Edgewood High School on Saturday with a pair of conference championships.

The North Clay boys outdistanced the field with a total of 135 points to top the host Colts' 80.5 points. Brown County placed third (62), Sullivan scored 58 points with Owen Valley (36) and South Vermillion rounding out the field with 28.5 points.

Ian Heffner and Nic Yocom spurred the victory with a total of 50 points in individual events. Heffner won the 200 meters (25.20), 400 meters (57.30) and 100 hurdles (15.30). Yocom claimed the 800 meters (2:17) and 1,600 (5:08.20) and was part of the winning 4x400 meter relay team. Devon Cooksey, Justice Bucholz and Scotty McGuffin teamed with Yocom to win with a time of 4:06.60.

North Clay's 4x100 relay team of Jacob Little, Garrett McKenzie, McGuffin and Jeremy Maffioli won in 50.50. Little was also second in the 100 meters.

Maffioli also claimed second in the high jump and third in the long jump. Daniel Kimball placed third in the high jump and third the shotput.

The North Clay girls scored a total of 112 points to top Brown County's 91 with Edgewood in third with 75 points. Owen Valley scored 63 points ahead of South Vermillion's 37 and Sullivan's 22.

Leeanna Knight claimed victories in both the 100 (13.40) and 200 meters 27.80 along with a win in the high jump (4-6) and a runner-up spot in the long jump (14-7).

Hannah Mattox was the victor in the shotput with a throw of 26-6 and was fifth in the discus. Whitney Halfhill took second-place in the 100 meters (14.10) and was third in the 200 and fourth in the long jump.

In distance events, Emily Conrad placed second in the 1,600 (6:22) ahead of Allie Dupin (6:35) and Conrad was fourth in the 800.

The girls' 4x100 relay team of Brooke Deighton, Emma Barnett, Natasha Barrett and Whitney Halfhill was second in 58.80.
