The sectional draw for the 2010 softball postseason was made on Thursday afternoon and area teams found out what path they would have to take in order to claim a championship.
The Northview Knights will take part in the Class 4A Plainfield Sectional 13 that is scheduled May 24-29.
The opening round games will see Plainfield taking on Martinsville with Terre Haute North and Mooresville seeing action in the other first round game. The Knights received a bye into the semifinal and will square off against No. 12 Terre Haute South. The Braves have won the two regular season match-ups between the teams with a 5-2 victory in the Big Four Tourney and an 11-3 win at Northview earlier in the season.
Plainfield is the defending sectional champion, defeating Mooresville 8-2 last year in the title game.
Shakamak is the defending champion of the Class A Clay City Sectional 58.
The host Eels lost a tough 1-0 decision to the Lakers in the semifinal after posting a 3-2 win against North Central in the opening game. Shakamak defeated White River Valley in the championship game, 9-2.
This year, Clay City will once again play host to the sectional round, but the Sectional is No. 61.
The No. 13 Eels drew the longest road to a title, however, they will open against White River Valley, a team that Clay City blasted 20-6 back on April 19. With a victory over the Wolverines, the Eels could see Union (Dugger), a squad that they defeated via a lopsided 18-0 decision in which Abby Reed hurled a no-hitter.
North Central and the Lakers will square off in the other half of the bracket with the winner slated to take on the victor of the Union vs. Clay City/WRV contest.
The Eels and Wolverines will face off on Monday, May 24 at 5 p.m. with Tuesday's action taking place at 5 p.m. starting with North Central's battle with Shakamak.
Season tickets will be sold at the gate for $8 with single session tickets available for $5.
format for 2010
A record 377 teams, three more than last season, were drawn and placed into brackets this morning for the 26th Annual IHSAA Softball State Tournament Series which begins in 11 days.
This year's state tournament will feature a different format as approved by the IHSAA Executive Committee last June. The Friday state semifinal games have been discontinued and replaced with a four-team semi-state round on Saturday, June 5, with winners advancing to a state championship game on Saturday, June 12. Previously, semi-states were part of the state tournament from 1991 through 1998.
The start of sectionals (May 24-29) remain the same but a one-game regional on Tuesday, June 1, on the home field of one of the participating teams will determine who moves on to semi-state play.
Among the top-ranked teams in the most recent poll from the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association, 4A No. 1 Penn begins its tournament run against Mishawaka in Sectional 3 at South Bend Adams. In Class 3A, top-ranked Boonville will host Gibson Southern in the Sectional 32 bye game. Class 2A No. 1 Wheeler will meet Lake Station Edison in Sectional 33 at Hammond Bishop Noll. And Class A's top-ranked Indianapolis Lutheran will take on Bethesda Christian at home in Sectional 57.
Among the defending state champions, Class 4A's Center Grove hosts Franklin Community in Sectional 11 and Class 3A's New Palestine drew the bye and will face the winner of Hamilton Heights-Mt. Vernon (Fortville) in Sectional 27 at Shelbyville. Madison-Grant, last year's 2A winner will face Oak Hill in Sectional 40 at Eastern (Greentown) and in Class A, Tecumseh will host Cannelton in Sectional 64.
