Local juvenile arrested for string of area burglaries

Friday, May 14, 2010

Officials arrested a suspect allegedly involved in several recent burglaries at a local business, including one involving a ransom note.

According to Clay County Sheriff Mike Heaton, a 17-year-old male juvenile from Brazil is currently incarcerated at a juvenile detention facility on allegations of breaking into Ferrellgas, 11785 North State Road 59, Brazil, three times during the past few weeks.

The most recent break-in occurred early Friday morning, and, according to officials, was the most odd.

Heaton told The Brazil Times that, after no money was found inside the business during a break-in, keys were taken from a vehicle left at the facility parking lot overnight and a note was left behind with instructions for the business owners.

"They were supposed to leave money in a specific place and the keys would be later returned," Heaton said.

"The motive behind these burglaries was apparently money."

Further details were unavailable pending the ongoing investigation.

Officials confirmed the suspect would remain in custody through out the weekend awaiting formal juvenile court proceedings, which will be scheduled per the Clay County Circuit Court calendar next week.
