TERRE HAUTE -- The Northview girls track team ended their season in a fairly impressive fashion Tuesday night, placing fourth in the Terre Haute North sectional, with a team score of 68. The Knights finished behind host North (176), Terre Haute South (121) and Linton (72) respectively.

Several Knights were able to advance to next week's regional action in Evansville by virtue of top-four finishes. Regional qualifiers included Annie Smiley (second in the 100 M Hurdles, third in the pole vault), Carlee Bell (third in the 200 M dash), Samantha Solomon (third in discus, second in shot put), Krista Stearley (third in the high jump) and the 4x100 M Relay team of Smiley, Bell, Jessica Thacker and Stearley (fourth).

Northview's greatest triumph on the evening came from sophomore Tara Summers, who placed first in the high jump competition with a leap of 5'1. Summers, who failed to qualify for the regional last year, was very excited about her accelerated rate of success, and said her performance Tuesday gave her great confidence heading into the future.

"I'm really happy," Summers said about her win. "I really didn't expect to win after last year, so I feel like I really improved."

Northview coach Ryand Tucker seemed relatively pleased with the effort, specifically crediting Summers and Stearley for their performance in the high jump, as well as seniors Bell and Solomon for advancing through their final sectional appearance. While he felt his team looked flat in a few areas, Tucker said the performance was about what he expected.

Annie Smiley (left) races to the finish line against Linton's Kelsey Andis in the 100 hurdles final. Andis edged Smiley for the win, but each will advance to the regional.
"The people I thought would get out, got out," Tucker said. "I'm mostly pleased with what I saw."

Tucker said his hope for his regional performers was that they all place within the top-eight of their respective events.

Though several of his competitors move on to regional action, many Knights saw their season end Tuesday. While he acknowledged the season wasn't 100% to his liking, Tucker expressed gratitude to all his athletes and expressed optimism going into the future.

"There were ups and downs (this season), but it was mostly a pleasing experience," Tucker said. "And we've got a lot of talent coming back next year, so that is very exciting."

Another local team in the event didn't fair as well. An already short-handed Clay City Eels squad was stretched even thinner, by what coach Elissa Downey referred to as unspecified "conflicts."

The Eels only competed in five events, placing in zero. The top finisher of the night was Breezy Wiley, whose 80'10 throw was good enough for 10th in the discus competition.

Though the evening was a bit discouraging for the first year coach, she said she hoped to return to the team next season, and believed better seasons lay ahead for the program.

"This year was definitely a learning experience," Downey said. "But we've got some good girls coming back, as well as a really good eighth-grade class coming up, so if I'm back coaching again next year, I'm optimistic we can do better."

The regional competition will take place at Evansville Central on Tuesday, May 25 at 5:30 p.m.
