TERRE HAUTE -- Both Northview and Clay City's boys track teams overcame horrific weather conditions to put forth impressive showings in the Terre Haute North Sectional on Thursday night.

The Knights put up 76 points, which was good enough for third, behind the host Patriots (153.5) and Terre Haute South (128). While Northview didn't have the best overall team score, a Knight did have one of the evening's most scene stealing performances.

Junior Joel Whittington was a force to be reckoned with, taking first place in three events. Whittington won the 110 M Hurdles (15.64), 200 M Dash (23.37) and 300 M Hurdles (41.38).

While he was pleased with his performance, Whittington said he felt he needed to improve on his times in next week's regional if he hoped to move on to compete in the state finals.

"All my races need work," Whittington said. "But while I can get better, I feel like I ran pretty well. The rain didn't slow me down as much as I thought it would."

Also turning in a quality performance was senior Connor Strain. Strain set a personal best time in both the 1,600 (4:27.65) and 3,200 (9:52.70), placing second in both events. Strain also advanced to the regional as a member of the third-place 4x800 M relay team, which includes Tanner Brown, Damon Hyatt and Colin Richards.

Devon Hall unleashes a throw on his way to a second-place finish in the discus.
Other Knights advancing to regional action were the 4x400 team of Trent Barnett, Tanner Brown, Michael Flora and Damon Hyatt (third) and Jordan Vanhorn (fourth in discus). Coach Chad Smith was visibly excited by his team's performance and was quick to sing their praises following the meet.

"We ran our best meet of the year tonight," Smith said. "It always feels good to coach a team that does their best when they need to."

Though a bit further down in the standings, the Eels of Clay City also achieved success on the evening, tying Sullivan for fifth-place with 37 points.

The Eels advanced in three events. Conner Modesitt, Jesse Vansickle, Josh Decker and Parker Modesitt's 4x800 team placed fourth (9:04.91), while Ethan Shaw took third (43.03) in the 300 meter hurdles.

In field events, Devon Hall took second in the discus with a throw of 132'11. Hall just narrowly missed advancing in the shot put competition, where he placed fifth.

Eels coach Keith Jones said his team met the expectations he had going into the evening, and he was happy to see a number of competitors on his club succeed in the unpleasant weather conditions.

"I'm pretty pleased (with our performance)" Jones said. "I thought the people who moved on would move on. I wish we could have had better weather, but overall I think we did well."

Josh Decker takes the handoff from Jesse Vansickle in the 3,200 relay at Thursday's sectional.
Seemingly upbeat from the effort of his team, Smith said he was very eager to continue the season into the upcoming regional event, hoping his competitors, in particular Whittington and Strain, would be able to build on the momentum they established Thursday and carry it all the way to the state finals.

"I'd really like to see track season go on a few more weeks," Smith said. "I just want us to give our best effort, but I think we've really got some guys who are capable of going on to state."

Jones' approach to the regional event is understandably that of the underdog. Despite seemingly insurmountable odds, he says he has great admiration for all the kids on his team, and thought it would be a good experience for all parties who advanced.

"You never really know what you're up against until you get there," Jones said. "But for a little 1-A school up against the competition we faced, I think we really did a good job and I look forward to watching our kids continue to advance."

Evansville Regional takes place next Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
