EVANSVILLE -- Northview senior, Samantha Solomon, certainly picked a good time to have her best discus throw of the season.

Solomon, headed to Indiana Tech to continue her throwing career next Fall, uncorked a throw of 117-0 at the Evansville Regional on Tuesday night.

Solomon's throw was just three inches short of Ashley Davis' school record.

The heave placed her in second and assured her of a trip to the IHSAA State Finals in Bloomington on Friday, June 4.

Solomon came back and finished sixth in the shotput in a tough field in which the top-two throwers each surpassed the state meet qualifying standard of 41-7. Cassie Wertman of Southridge won the event with a throw of 46-8 and also claimed the discus with a throw of 127-3.

Solomon will be the lone Northview athlete qualified for the state finals as several teammates fell short of a top-three finish required for the trip to Bloomington.

Annie Smiley came the closest of the group as she qualified for the 100-meter hurdle finals out of a 15-competitor preliminary round with a time of 16.79. However, Smiley placed eighth in the finals with a time of 17.31. She also competed in the pole vault where she placed in a tie for 10th-place after clearing 8-0.

Northview sophomores, Tara Summers and Krista Stearley, finished in a tie for 11th-place in the high jump after not quite being able to duplicate their sectional success. The duo each cleared 4-10 at the regional, but couldn't make the next step to match their jumps at the sectional. Stearley was also in the 100 meters, but did not qualify for the finals with her 14th-place time of 14.15.

Carlee Bell, a Northview senior, placed 10th in the 200-meter preliminary event with a time of 27.76, but did not reach the finals in the event. Bell also ran with the 4x100 meter relay team that included Smiley, Stearley and Jessica Thacker. The group raced to a time of 51.98, which was good for seventh-place.

Terre Haute North, the sectional team champion, placed second and was buoyed by a title in the 3,200-mete relay event and a 3,200-meter win by Chanli Mundy. TaPring Goatee placed second in the 800 meter while breaking the Patriots' school record.

The IHSAA State Finals take place at Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex at Indiana University. The field events, including pole vault, long jump and discus, begin at 3 p.m.
