Clay County residents will have a say into who will be nominated for some prestigious awards.
Nominations are currently being accepted for the 2010 Chamber of Commerce Focus Awards, which recognizes the effort of area residents in various categories.
"This is our way of honoring outstanding and exemplary service to the community of Clay County," Clay County Chamber of Commerce President Phil Redenbarger told The Brazil Times.
The Focus Awards had previously been given out in 1996-99, 2001 and 2004, but has been defunct until now.
"It used to be an ongoing thing, but it is coming back to life," Chamber member Mike McCullough said.
Chamber Executive Director Tiffany Cook added, "We wanted to do something to allow the public to honor those in their own community."
The awards are split into seven categories -- Agricultural, Education, Beautification, Manufacturing, Commercial, Non-Profits and Lifetime Achievement -- in which the public is being asked to make nominations.
"After the nominations are made, they will be reviewed by the Chamber, and the board of directors will select the winners, which will be announced during an awards banquet at Traditions, Saturday, Nov. 6," Cook told The Brazil Times. "As of right now, we do not have a time set for the banquet to begin."
Nominees must also meet specific criteria to be considered for the awards. The criteria can be found at www.claycountychamber.org/focus_awards.h..., or may be picked up at the Chamber office, 535 E. National Ave., Brazil, during normal office hours (8 a.m.-noon, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday). For the Agricultural, Commercial and Industrial categories, the criteria are the same.
To be considered for the Lifetime Achievement Award, the nominee must:
* Be a positive influence on the community at-large,
* Have demonstrated community leadership,
* Be recognized within his/her profession,
* Be a role model for others, and
* Have a history of volunteering for community service.
To submit a nominee for any, or all, of the seven categories, contact the Chamber office at 448-8457, or by fax at 448-9957.
