Terre Haute Community Band to open season Saturday

Thursday, June 3, 2010

TERRE HAUTE -- The Terre Haute Community Band will kick off its 2010 season Saturday, with an indoor concert at the Family YMCA building in Fairbanks Park.

The band will feature "The Age of Aquarius," including music from the 1960s. The performance begins at 8 p.m., and is free.

Betsy Baer, a graduate of St. Mary-of-the-Woods College Music and Theatre Department, will be the featured vocalist for the event.

She previously appeared with the Fabulous 40s Big Band and in several SMWC music and theatre productions.

Gifts will be given away as well. Heinl's Flower Shop will give away a bouquet, which will be presented to a lucky couple. An introductory membership in the YMCA will also be given away.

The music is the centerpiece of the evening. Songs from the Jersey Boys, a documentary-style musical based on the lives of one of the most successful 1960s rock 'n roll groups, the Four Seasons, will be played, as well as selections from the Beatles, in addition to selections from Joe Zawinul, Karl King and Edwin Franko Goldman.

The conductor of the Terre Haute Community Band is Yvonne Newlin, the Performing Arts Coordinator at Lincoln Trail Community College.

The Terre Haute Parks and Recreation Department sponsor the summer concert series.
