BLOOMINGTON -- Three years ago, Northview High School was represented at the IHSAA Girls State Track and Field Meet in the discus. On Friday, Samantha Solomon became the most recent Knight to take part in the state's biggest stage for high school track and field.

The girls took center stage for the 37th Annual Girls State Meet at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex on the campus of Indiana University. Hot, sunny skies greeted the contestants as Solomon and her fellow discus competitors opened up the meet along with the pole vault, high jump and long jump. A sizable crowd made for a festive atmosphere in the discus area where Solomon competed during the first flight of nine throwers.

"It was exciting and it was good to have so many people here," Solomon said of the big crowd focused on the throwing events. "It was nice to have people here watching the throws. It was fun."

The competition proceeded quickly as Solomon, nursing a sore knee, released a throw of 106-3 in her third and final attempt. That effort proved to be good enough for 25th overall in the event won by Portage junior, Tori Bliss, with a throw of 144-2.

"It's amazing (to have so many fans backing the throwers), because at home there aren't many people there watching you. I think, honestly, that it'll be a lot like this in college.," Solomon said while referring to her collegiate future at Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne. "People will be there to actually watch you throw. There'll just be a lot more rules of course."

Northview joins Ashley Davis as the most recent Northview athlete to compete in the state finals. Davis competed in the finals in both 2005 and 2007.

"It's exciting and I'm happy that my name will be part (of that list of state finalists)," Solomon said.

Other local competitors had mixed results as North Central (Farmersburg) senior, Shelby Higginbottom came through with a fourth-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 17-10 , which was five inches farther than her previous season best. She returned to place ninth ahead of Terre Haute North freshman, Tapring Goatee in the 800 meters in 2:17.70. Defending state champion, Abby Farley of Park Tudor, broke the state finals record in the event by winning the 800 in 2:09.50 to break Lawrence North's Temeka Kincy's 2003 record of 2:09.82.

The 4x800 relay team from Terre Haute North, started well and led their flight over the first two legs before fading late in the race and placing 17th overall in 9:41.61. Carmel won the event in 9:10.90.

In the 3,200 meters, Kaylee McClananahan of Fort Wayne Carroll led a 1-2 finish by the school in 10:50.47. McClanahan topped her seeded time by 21 seconds to win the event. Terre Haute North freshmen, Chanli Mundy (17th in 11:47.84) and Annie Mullican (25th in 12:04.67) also competed in the event.
