According to information provided by the Clay County Sheriff's Department, Clay County 911 dispatchers received a report that Edward Lee Doran, 40, entered a rural Cory residence and held a woman and her two children against their will while in possession of a handgun.
According to officials, the woman and two children, one of which is allegedly related to Doran, ultimately escaped and hid in a nearby cornfield until law enforcement arrived.
It was initially reported the suspect fled the scene on foot. Members of the CCSD and Indiana State Police along with various other departments participated in an extensive search for the suspect.
However, upon further investigation, officials believe Doran, formerly from Vermillion, Ill., left the scene in a white Chevy Trail Blazer with Illinois license plate number LEASH2.
Officials believe Doran, who has a lengthy history of criminal allegations and charges, is considered to be armed and dangerous.
On or about May 29, Doran failed to return while serving a sentence at Vigo County Work Release. He is also a suspect in an alleged rape that occurred in Clay County on May 28.
Doran is also facing an active felony arrest warrant issued out of Clay County for petition to revoke probation on a previous charge of strangulation on Aug. 16, 2009.
Clay County Sheriff Mike Heaton said if people see the suspect or the suspect's vehicle do not approach him or attempt to make contact. Instead, notify the Clay County Sheriff's Department or call 911 with the location of the suspect and follow dispatcher's instructions.
