Man dies in ATV accident

Sunday, July 11, 2010

An accident involving an ATV took the life of a person Saturday evening.

At approximately 5:30 p.m., Clay County Sheriff Mike Heaton said officials with the Van Buren Volunteer Fire Department responded to a "brush fire," near County Road 1350 North between Murphy Road and County Road 100 East.

Upon putting the fire out, Heaton said firefighters noticed the ATV and the victim, identified as William D. Carter, 46, Daytona Beach, Fla..

Heaton said the accident is still under investigation.

It is believed following the crash, the ATV caught on fire.

In addition to officials with the fire department and Clay County Sheriff's Department, the Department of Natural Resources also responded.

An autopsy for Carter has been scheduled for 10 a.m., Monday.

I want to Thank you for covering this story about my Brother Billy ( or Bill as he preferred :). I have to say it was probably one of the saddest days of my life, losing him.

We were just reunited a mere 44 days ago after not seeing each other for over 14 years.

Though he was livinging in Florida all these years, he'd had enough of his old life and was working very hard trying turning his life around and wanted to reconnect with the family again. His Brother and I (sister) were so happy to finally get him home again and he inspired us all with his hopes and dreams for a better future.

On the day of the accident, he was finally taking a day off from working hard non-stop all week and decided to go joy riding on the 4 wheeler, he was fairly new at riding one so he didn't have much experience on them, so a day of blowing off steam after a hard week of work it suddenly turned tragic for us all. I had just been by to see him only 3 hours earlier that afternoon, so needless to say, "shock" and "pain" were the words used to describe the end of our day.

While they are still trying to determine if he were alive when the ATV burst into flames it is known to us that he had massive injury to the chest which in turn punctured his heart and that he was also badly burned and had multiple fractures on variuos parts of his body.

If there is any good news in this it is that it happened quickly.

I especially want to Thank all of those who responded to the accident.

~It can't be stressed enough on the importantance of safety while riding an ATV (4 wheeler)~ be very careful of your speed and don't try to climb an embankment that is steep.

Thank You Brazil Times for allowing me to share this with you and your readers.

A Sad hearted Sister Who loved her Big Brother :(
