Old jail catches on fire

Monday, July 12, 2010

Members of the Brazil City Fire Department put out a small fire at the old Clay County Jail facility Monday shortly before noon. While removing scrap metal inside the building, workers with Griffin Auto Salvage accidentally caught some materials in the attic area on fire. Assistant Fire Chief Roy Kellar (standing) and firefighter Robert Lamb (pictured) cut through a heavy metal door on the rear side of the building to allow ventilation after the fire was put out. Brazil City Police Department provided traffic control while members of the Clay County Justice Center provided security around the outside of the building during the fire. Clay County Commissioners Paul Sinders and Charlie Brown, who were both on the scene, told The Brazil Times there was no structural damage that they knew of.
