Letter to the Editor

Thanksgiving program back

Sunday, August 1, 2010

To the Editor:

A group of individuals between agencies, organizations and churches have decided to begin the process to coordinate Thanksgiving baskets throughout Clay County.

This process will follow the tradition of the Christmas Assistance Program.

There will be an application process and also will decrease the chances of families receiving more than one basket.

We have found throughout the years that there has been many families who have received multiple baskets and we believe that there are other families not getting the chance to take advantage of this opportunity when they are in need as well.

Applications for assistance will be made available to families in Clay County at the Brazil Housing Authority, Clay County Department of Child Services and Family Resources, Hamilton Center and throughout all county schools Aug. 9.

There will also be a Letter to the Editor and a notice in the paper to inform families of the applications.

I have (copies) of the application in case you would like to make a referral for a family in need.

The deadline for submitting an application for Thanksgiving Baskets is Oct. 22.

Shortly after the Oct. 22 deadline, a small group of local volunteers will review the applications for completeness, check for any duplicates, and confirm eligibility.

Based on the information that you supply, this group will then assign families to the various adoptive organizations.

If you are interested in participating in coordinating families in need for Thanksgiving baskets, please let me know how many families you would like to adopt.

I will have a list provided to you the week following Oct. 22.

If you have any questions or concerns about the program, please feel free to contact me at 448-8801, 812-251-4773, or monicasmiles78@aol.com.

Sincerely,

Monica Wallace,
