'Protect Your Identity' seminar set for Aug. 20

Valley Investment Group will host a free community seminar, "Protect Your Identity," at 2 p.m., Friday, Aug. 20, at the Brazil Public Library.

The special speaker at the event will be former Special Deputy to the Sullivan County Sheriff's Department Pam Hodge.

The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as nine million Americans have their identities stolen each year. Last year alone, consumers reported paying more than $1.7 billion in fraud complaints.

Since January 2000, reported identity thefts have increased by more than 800 percent. Of these thefts, 50 percent reported between 2007-09 affected Americans between the ages of 40-59.
