Eric W. Hewitt

Navy Lt. Eric W. Hewitt, son of Joyce E. and Thomas K. Hewitt of Brazil, Ind., along with 1,000 fellow sailors and Marines on USS New Orleans (LPD-18), home ported in San Diego, Calif. recently embarked on a scheduled three-month deployment in support of Southern Partnership Station (SPS).

SPS is a deployment of various specialty platforms to the U.S. Southern Command area of responsibility in Latin America. The mission's primary goal is information sharing with various navies, coast guards and civilian services throughout the region.

USS New Orleans is a part of Amphibious Squadron FIVE (CPR5). CPR5 prepares and directs expeditionary warfare missions in support of national objectives by employing the combat power of amphibious ships, cruiser-destroyer attack ships and the Marine Corps in the maritime, littoral and inland environments.

"The training in which we engaged in will continue to solidify the foundation for global security and prosperity," said CPR5 Commodore, Capt. Peter J. Brennan, SPS mission commander.

Hewitt is a 1998 graduate of Northview High School, Brazil, and joined the Navy in May 2006. He is a 2002 graduate of Indiana State University, Terre Haute, Ind. with a B. S. Degree and a 2006 graduate of Kansas City University of Medicine, Kansas City, Mo. with a D. O. Degree.


Joshua N. Stark

Army National Guard Pvt. Joshua N. Stark has graduated from Basic Combat Training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission and received instruction and training exercises in drill and ceremonies, Army history, core values and traditions, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, rifle marksmanship, weapons use, map reading and land navigation, foot marches, armed and unarmed combat, and field maneuvers and tactics.

He is the son of Hellen M. Brown of Cory, Ind.

His wife, Amber, is the daughter of Sue Gillie of Terre Haute, Ind.

The private is a 2001 graduate of Clay City High School, Ind.


Jake Carpenter

PVT Jake Carpenter, 21 years old, son of John Carpenter, Brazil, graduated on June 24, 2010, from the United States Army 795th Military Police at Fort Leonard, Mo.

Jake completed 19 weeks of training, and received a promotion in rank for the biggest loser of weight loss.
