He was born Jan. 26, 1934, in Clarke County, Ill., the son of Samuel Dean Garner and Armenta Garner.
He served in the U.S. Army and was based in Korea. He worked as a Tool and Die Maker for General House wares in Terre Haute.
On April 23, 1960, he married Anna Kathryne Church Garner.
They have celebrated 50 years of marriage together.
Dean always liked to have a vegetable garden, working outside and staying busy at his work bench.
Dean and Anna were very active at the Burnett Church when their children were young. They later attended the First Baptist Church and Ebenezer Church in Clay County.
Survivors include his wife Anna Garner, Brazil, daughters Helen Houser (Jack), Center Point, and Deana Lawson (Doug Isom), Brazil, grandchildren Melissa Madsen (David), Jennifer Mace (Jeremy), B.J. Lawson, and Lee Ann Lawson, great-grandchildren Cullen, Haley and Noah Mace, Hannah, Miriam and Bethany Madsen, brothers Russell Garner (Louella), Terre Haute, and Herb Garner (Betty), Paris, Ill., sisters Dorothy Garner and Katherine Nichols, many nieces, nephews and extended family.
Services will take place at 2 p.m., Thursday, at Lawson-Miller Chapel, with Rev. William Price officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, from noon-2 p.m.
Military honors will also be provided by the American Legion Post No. 2, and V.F.W. No. 1127.
Cremation was chosen.
