Even though the Northview Knights' soccer team played with heart and determination until the last second, the visiting Crawfordsville Athenians ultimately defeated them, 12-2 Thursday night.

The Knights' effort the entire game was admirable, but they just weren't able to keep up with Crawfordsville's game exposure. The Athenians had a whopping 10 seniors starting, compared to the Knights' three.

Even with the imbalance, both the score and experience, Northview head coach Don Bryan was satisfied with the performance.

"It was good hustle ... I'm very pleased," Bryan said. "It's something to build on."

Things started off about as bad as it could have for the Knights, with Crawfordsville scoring two quick goals within the game's first three minutes. The Athenians kept the pressure on, scoring two more before Northview freshman Marc Underwood made a spectacular goal, with Alex Frankville and freshman Trey Boor assisting.

Bryan was proud of Underwood for his goal.

"Marc Underwood gets the goal, his first goal as a freshman," Bryan said "And that's due to being in there as a freshman, and that's what it takes."

Frankville was also instrumental in another Northview goal during a penalty kick.

A senior, Frankville drilled a nice shot that went just inches between the goalkeeper's outstretched fingertips and the inner edge of the goal.

After another Crawfordsville score, the Knights went into halftime down 5-2, but they came out of it fresh and energetic. The hustle was improved, as well as the communication between Northview players.

The Athenians were doing everything they could in the second half to finish off the Knights, but Northview did a remarkable job of blocking shots, with double digit saves by the end of the night.

Even with the score 12-2 and four minutes left in the game, the Knights kept fighting as if the score were tied.

Frankville also had a great evening statistically, with five steals in the game.

Although this game was over by just a few minutes, Bryan was already looking ahead to Northview's next game.

"I don't think we took a step backwards," Bryan said. "...We have another tough one this weekend, we've got Bloomington South, another top team in the state, and Martinsville, who flirts with that top 25 type status."

Even though the game seemed one-sided, Northview held their heads high.

Northview's next contest is a tournament at Washington High School Saturday morning at 9:15 a.m.
