LINTON -- As early season tests go, the Northview tennis team passed the first one with flying colors as the Knights defeated Linton on the road Wednesday evening, 5-0.

A potential sectional foe that had a bit of revenge on its mind after Northview knocked them from the sectional last season, the Miners matched up well and gave their visitors a battle.

In the No. 1 singles spot, Northview's Carson Kleiber got a rematch with Seth Herndon, who had defeated him in the sectional last season by a 6-1, 6-2 score. However, on Wednesday, Kleiber was on top of his game and turned the tables by scoring a 6-4, 6-0 victory that had his coach singing his praises.

"Carson Kleiber was extremely dominant in his match," Northview coach Craig Cook said. "After a back-and-forth start to the match, Carson really stepped it up in defeating a strong opponent in Herndon. It was Carson's best match of the season to date."

Cook was also pleased at how his No. 2 singles player, Caleb Mershon, rebounded in a successful comeback effort against the Miners' Kris Shipman. Mershon lost the first set by a 4-6 score, however, he came back to earn 6-4, 6-2 wins in the final two sets.

"I was also happy with Caleb's comeback against Shipman at No. 2 singles. That is the competitive spirit I expect out of Caleb. Linton's top-two singles players are very nice players. This was a very good win for both Carson and Caleb."

Dillon Reynolds also had a fight on his hands at No. 3 singles against the Miners' Ben Brown.

Reynolds won the opening game 6-3, however, Brown came back to win the second set in a tie-break, 7-6 (7-4). With the match on the line, Reynolds came back to pick up a 7-5 decision third set.

In the doubles matches, Northview got a 6-0, 6-2 win from Joey Thomas and Sam Miller at No. 1 singles and the team of Cole Watts and Bryce Britton won by a 6-1, 6-0 score.

In the junior varsity matches, Garrett Baysinger downed Luke Jerrells by a 6-0 score. Skyler Holifield also swept his opponent and Alec Coughanowr won 6-4.

The Knights return home for a Sept. 7 match against Greencastle.
