Relay For Life of Clay County is getting the dogs involved.
The local organization will sponsor, "Bark For Life," Saturday, Sept. 18, at the Forest Park Track.
Registration for the event begins at 11 a.m. Cost is $10 for the first dog and $5 for additional dogs. There is a limit of two dogs per participant and registration includes a goody bag for the dogs, provided by Scott Pet Products.
This will be the first fundraiser for the organization for its 2011 fiscal year.
"This is the first time for it (in Clay County)," 2010 Event Chair Janice Piatt told The Brazil Times.
According to information provided to The Times, all dogs must be current on their shots.
Piatt said the local organization wasn't aware until recently about the possible fundraiser.
"There are other (Relay For Life organizations) that do this," she said.
She added all dogs taking part in the walk must be on leashes.
Additional information provided to The Times from the organization stated, "Dogs provide emotional support for many cancer patients and caregivers of cancer patients."
In addition, dogs aren't allowed at Relay For Life events, giving those interested in attending the Sept. 18 event an opportunity to "bring your dogs out and fight back against cancer."
"They will bring their dogs and walk them around the track," Piatt added. "It's kind of like showing (off) your dog."
