With September being National College Savings Month, a spokesperson from Upromise Investments will be at the Brazil Public Library to conduct a seminar at 2 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 23.
The library is located at 204 N. Walnut St., Brazil.
The seminar is sponsored by the Valley Investment Group and Upromise Investments, Inc.
The event's focus will be on the Indiana 529 College Savings Plan, a plan which the state set up to help college students.
Savings like contributions are eligible for an Indiana state income tax credit of 20 percent, up to a $1,000 maximum yearly credit.
To help families prepare for the future, the 108th Congress of the United States officially recognized September as National College Savings Month in 2003.
With college costs increasing yearly at a steady 8 percent, children born today will face college tuition costs that are 3-4 times the current average amount.
For the 2008-09 academic year, one year of tuition and fees averaged about $6,585 per year for a four-year public in-state college or university and $25,143 per year for a four-year private institution.
The price does not include costs such as room, board and textbooks.
Refreshments will be provided as well as free materials for Indiana's 529 Savings Plan.
Seating is limited. Those interested in attending should call 812-244-5307.
