ELLETSVILLE -- The Northview boys' tennis team continued its strong play this season, winning its ninth match against just one defeat.
The Knights scored a 4-1 victory on the road against Western Indiana Conference foe, Edgewood in a match that coach Craig Cook noted was a very good measuring stick for his squad.
"This was our most important victory of the season to date. Beating Edgewood has been on our minds since the summer workouts began," Cook said. "We knew that in order for us to do well in the WIC, we had to beat Edgewood."
The Knights got a key victory at No. 1 singles from Carson Kleiber, who topped the Mustangs' Alex Narey in a crucial battle, 1-6, 7-6 (7-0), 6-0.
"Carson Kleiber was just amazing tonight in sets No. 2 and No. 3. After losing the first set, Carson changed his style of game against Narey and began to move him around the court much more," Cook said. "Carson's patience and never quit attitude tonight were key. Edgewood's coach pointed out to me as well that Narey hadn't ever lost a conference match in four years so this obviously was huge for Carson tonight. He's been a true leader on the court all year long."
In the No. 2 singles match, Caleb Mershon also earned a victory with a 6-1, 6-3 decision against Brandon Owens.
"Caleb played a very consistent and smart match tonight. He used his power and quickness to beat the gutty, (Brandon) Owens. Owens was playing a bit injured tonight, but Caleb never took his foot off the pedal against him. Caleb really gets up for big matches and tonight was no exception. His play was tremendous."
Both of the Knights' doubles teams came away with wins as Joey Thomas and Cole Watts teamed to win a 6-1, 6-3 match at No. 1 and Bryce Britton and Garrett Baysinger won via a 6-0, 6-4 decision.
Cook felt that his doubles teams each played well in earning the victories.
"Joey and Cole played another outstanding match tonight. This combination at No. 1 doubles has been a great combination since we put them together," Cook said. "Joey is such a leader out there and both of them just play their hearts out ever time they step on the court. Cole's hard work in practice is definitely paying off in matches now.
"Bryce and Garrett combined for their most impressive victory of the season at No. 2 doubles. Both of them are really beginning to become comfortable playing with each other," Cook continued. "Bryce continued to hit massive serves tonight to go along with solid ground strokes. Garrett played with the kind of grit and toughness I want him to play with. In the final game of the match, Garrett served his team's way back from 0-40 to win five straight points to seal the match for Northview."
The Knights return home to face West Vigo on Thursday in another conference match-up at 5 p.m.
