North Clay tames Wildcats

CLINTON -- The North Clay volleyball teams returned victorious from a road trip to Clinton on Wednesday night, claiming wins in all three matches against South Vermillion.

The sixth-grade Knights squared off with a South Vermillion team that had an abundance of players and the squads played three games to accommodate all the players on the Wildcats' roster.

North Clay won each of the three games, 25-7, 25-10, 15-6 led by a 14-point, three-assist match from Stacy Payton and seven points each from Parker Spears and Linzy Lunsford. Kenzie Stearley had six points and both Megan Sampson and Samantha Thomas had five points each. Mackensie Higgenbotham added three points and Allison Herrick had two points.

In the seventh-grade match, North Clay came away with a 25-9, 25-16 victory led by six points, two aces and a kill from Ashley Heck and five points each from Alyssa ocom and Kaytlin Galloway. Yocom also had a kill in the victory. Madison Trusty had three points with two aces and a kill and Grace Timberman had three points. Both Lauren Atkinson and Breanna Dove had two points, Faith Wells had one point and Madison McDonald posted two assists in the win.

In the eighth-grade match-up, North Clay remained unbeaten with a 25-8, 25-14 victory with McKenzi Kumpf tallying seven points, two aces and four assists. Sydney Buell added seven points, two aces and a kill for North Clay and Mikayla Rowan added four points, two aces and three kills. Mannah Mace had three kills and an assist and Whitney Halfhill scored two kills and two points with Samantha Smith contributing a kill.

The sixth-grade is now 4-3 overall while both the seventh and-eighth-grade teams are 8-0 and face Sullivan on the road Monday beginning at 6 p.m.
