Man in court for alleged theft

Thursday, September 23, 2010

Daniel E. Miles
A Terre Haute man recently appeared in court on allegations of stealing copper.

According to information available at the Clay County Courthouse, Clay County Sheriff's Department investigators and the Clay County Prosecutor's Office presented enough evidence in a probable cause affidavit for Clay Superior Court Judge Blaine Akers to issue an arrest warrant for Daniel E. Miles on Sept. 16.

Stemming from an investigation into a reported theft at an undisclosed location in Clay County by Resource Land Holdings, a Colorado-based company, Miles was charged with a class D felony theft and a class A misdemeanor criminal trespass for allegedly taking an undisclosed amount of copper wiring and/or tubing without permission sometime Aug. 15-16.

Miles was taken into custody by Indiana State Police and booked into the Clay County Justice Center Wednesday.

Miles appeared in superior Court Thursday by video conference.

After informing Miles of his rights, Pro Tem Judge Jason Brown appointed a public defender in the matter, established a $7,000 cash bond (with no 10 percent allowed) and tentatively scheduled a jury trial for Jan. 24, 2011.

Miles remains in custody awaiting further court proceedings.
