JASONVILLE -- The Clay City boys and girls cross country teams put forth some of their best performances of the season on Saturday in the Shakamak Invitational.

Led by Ben Denker, five Clay City runners finished in the top-25 while scoring 68 points for third-place in the varsity boys race.

Eastern Greene beat West Vigo by the sixth-runner tie-breaker to win the meet. West Vigo's Andrew Kump was the individual champ in 16 minutes and 21 seconds.

The Clay City girls' team finished sixth with 129 points, led by Ashley Sumner. Eastern Greene won the team title with 35 points and Cloverdale's Claudia Monnett took first-place in 21:07.

Denker toured the dusty Shakamak course in 17:45 for eighth-place and Jake Tiefel took 11th in 18:07. Jesse Vansickle finished an encouraging 14th in 18:27. Austin Sinders crossed the line in 18th-place at 18:37 and Blake Cochran rounded out the Eels' scoring in 23rd in 19:01.

"I felt like overall we ran better today than we ran through the season. Ben Denker had a good race, our first guy in. Jesse (Vansickle) was third (for us)," Clay City coach Keith Jones said.

Coach Jones is hoping Vansickle's run was a breakthrough performance. Vansickle was Clay City 's No. 1 runner last year, but has struggled with health issues so far this season.

Phoebe Farmer placed 33rd for the Clay City girls.
"That's the best race (Vansickle has) had this year," Jones said.

The rebuilding effort for the Clay City girls program took a step forward, according to coach Darby Sinders.

"We ran better today than we have all season, so we're real happy," Sinders said.

Sumner took 29th place for Clay City in 25:19, followed by Phoebe Farmer 26:08 for 33rd. Kayla Sinders came in 39th with a 27:33 time, followed closely by Michaela Hogan at 41st in 28:19. Krista Sinders was 44th and Alex Wolfe rounded out the Eels effort in 30:23 for 45th place.

"Michaela Hogan really came on. She ran a great race, for her. And our leader, Ashley Summer, come along," coach Sinders said.

In the junior high races, the North Clay boys finished third with 106 points behind winner South Knox (16) and Eminence (82). Clay City took fifth in the 12-team race with 144 points.

North Clay's girls also finished third with 112 points. Vincennes Clark won with 28 points and South Knox took second with 66. Clay City finished 10th in the 11-team race with 203 points.
