Harmony Happenings

Wednesday, September 29, 2010

My best friend from high school days passed this week. Marilyn (Hughbanks) Smith went to be with Jesus on Sunday evening. She had fought a long battle with cancer and was able to be herself until just a couple of weeks ago. Even when she was tired, Marilyn cheered everyone around her. She loved her family and friends and her church. She and her husband weren't just a couple, they were buddies. Marilyn will be missed.

Oct. 7 is the packing day for Operation Classroom. If you are intending to donate school supplies to help needy children in Africa, this is the time. The packing will be done at Breden UMC.

Harmony United Methodist Church is having a Clean Up/Fix Up Day this Saturday, starting at 8 a.m. Pastor Terry Jeffers will prepare biscuits, gravy, and pumpkin butter. Erie Bell is baking the cinnamon rolls. Shirley Pell and I will make breakfast casseroles. We want to jump start those workers and keep all them well nourished.

The work session runs all day. Rose Marie Pell, Jane Osborn, and others are bringing lunch. If you can't work all day, try to arrange to help for 2-3 hours. The To-Do List is pretty long. I will gladly take any extra volunteers to help on the bulletin boards.

Mark your calendars. HUMC will be holding a Fish Fry on Sunday, Nov. 7. This will be the third year for this event. The Jonah Fish will be served right after church, usually noon-3 p.m. We usually have our Worship Service around 4 p.m. I don't have the specific times yet.

Congrats to the Northview Band. If I have it correctly, they won their second first-place for the season. HUMC will be happy to help furnish lunch for them on the 9th during their competition.

HUMC Women met at my house for the "Green Picnic" on Monday evening. We try to have at least one event where we stress saving the planet.

Erie Bell and Sheila TerMeer won the door prizes. There, too, I tried to avoid paper and plastic.

Each basket was lined with a dishtowel and held another towel and two dish cloths. Both ladies received a ceramic pumpkin, snack dish with canapé knife, cookies in a tin, pencils with fall erasers, and notes tucked among the towels. I could not come up with an alternative for notepaper and I couldn't resist buying those pretty fall designs.

After supper, we had a business meeting and elected officers for next year. Sheila TerMeer will stay in the position of president and I will remain the secretary. Rose Marie Pell will take the office of vice-president and Barbara Pell will officially be the treasurer.

Sheila TerMeer and Jean Rowings had attended the Fall Meeting of the West District UMW in Crawfordsvile. Sheila reported that she had brought back information on social justice for use at our next meeting. She will now serve on the West District nominating committee.

Arline and Ward Meyers have been making beautiful handmade baskets since they retired. They often sell them at various craft fairs around the area. Clay County Retired Teachers have asked them to bring some of their creations to the Fall Social on Oct. 26. All of the retired teachers are familiar with "Show and Tell." This will be "Show and Sell" if they have anything left after Covered Bridge.

CCRTA still needs raffle and door prizes for the Fall Social. If you have a business, have business contacts, or would like to donate something, please contact Mary Ann Froderman or any of the officers. This is always a good way to promote your business.

The Fall Social will be a fun and informative meeting. We are repeating the chili supper like last year. It was a success. The group will gather at the Kennedy Crossing Bingo Hall at 6 p.m.
