Clay City boys second in SWIAC

JASONVILLE -- The Clay City boys placed two runners on the all-conference team as the Eels placed third at a highly contested Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference cross country meet at Shakamak on Thursday evening. The Clay City girls were sixth as a team.

Eastern Greene's boys repeated as the SWIAC champions, edging out Bloomfield by five points. The Thunderbirds scored 46 points with the Cardinals tallying 51 to get by the Eels' 57. North Central and Shakamak rounded out the team scoring as Linton, North Daviess, Union and White River Valley not fielding complete teams.

Jake Phegley of Bloomfield crossed the finish line first in 17:10, winning by 21 seconds over Eastern Greene's Brody Martin.

The Clay City boys were led by an all-SWIAC effort from Jake Tiefel, who placed eighth in a time of 18:11. Ben Denker was also an all-conference runner with a ninth-place in 18:13.

Austin Sinders placed 11th for the Eels followed by Blake Cochran in 14th, Jesse Vansickle in 15th, Wayne Tharp in 19th and Michael Brooks in 28th.

In the girls' race, Bloomfield's Julie Riggins repeated as the conference champion with a time of 20:57 followed by Linton's Lexie McBride in 21:30.

The Cardinals were the team champions and also repeated with a total of 34 points to narrowly beat out Eastern Greene's 37 points. Shakamak was third with 101 with North Daviess (104), North Central (121) and Clay City (129) rounding out the team standings. Linton, Union and WRV did not field complete teams.

Clay City was paced by Ashley Sumner in 24th in 25:35 with Phoebe Farmer in 28th in 26:23 followed by Kayla Sinders in 30th with a time of 27:42. Krista Sinders was 33rd, Alex Wolfe in 35th and Michaella Hogan placed 38th.
