The following is a list of upcoming events provided to The Brazil Times:

Trash Pickup

The City of Brazil's Sanitation Department is conducting heavy trash pickup on the following Fridays, based on normal trash pickup schedule:

* Friday -- Tuesday's trash route,

* Oct. 22 -- Wednesday's trash route, and

* Oct. 29 -- Thursday's trash route.

Heavy trash pickup must be reserved and may be done by calling City Hall at 443-2221 or the Brazil City Street Department at 448-8501.

Yard Sale

The Cunot Community Center is currently taking donations for a yard sale coming up in October.

Those interested in donating may drop off items at the center, Monday-Friday, from 8 a.m.-2 p.m.

Food Pantry Open

The Cunot Community Center Food Pantry is open every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 9-11 a.m.

Those interested in utilizing the pantry must bring identification with current address.

Meeting date changed

The Harmony Town Council will conduct its Oct. 12, 2010, meeting at 7 p.m., at the Harmony Community Center rather than the first Tuesday of the month.

The meeting will take place in conjunction with the adoption of the 2011 budget.

Heating assistance

The Energy Assistance Program of Western Indiana Community Action Agency, Inc., will begin the 2010-11 Winter Heating Assistance Program Tuesday.

In Clay County, applications will be taken by appointment only. Those interested may schedule an appointment by calling 443-0122, Monday-Friday, from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m., excluding noon-1 p.m.

Story Hour!

Story Hour at the Brazil Public Library will resume next week.

Story Hour for children ages 3-5 will begin Tuesday, at 10:30 a.m. Another class will be available Wednesday, also at 10:30 a.m.

'Arthritis Fitness'

Fun Time Fitness and Aquatics in Brazil will offer "Arthritis Fitness," Wednesday, at 6 p.m.

The free workshop will allow participants to learn aquatic exercises designed to improve joint flexibility.

Another free workshop, "Arthritis Fitness II," will be offered in November.

No reservations are necessary but pool space is limited.

St. Vincent Clay Hospital will offer seasonal flu vaccines and pneumonia vaccines to residents of Clay County on the following dates, times and locations:

* Friday, Oct. 8 -- 8:30-9:30 a.m., at Meridian Towers,

* Friday, Oct. 8 -- 10-11 a.m., at Jackson Gardens,

* Friday, Oct. 8 -- 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., at Brazil Senior Center, and

* Friday, Oct. 8 -- 2-3 p.m., at Cooper Towers.

Cost for the flu vaccine is $25 and the pneumonia vaccine is $65, for those without Medicare Part B.

The Reelsville Volunteer Fire Department will conduct its monthly breakfast from 7-11 a.m., Saturday.

The menu will consist of biscuits and gravy, pancakes, eggs, bacon and sausage.

Meeting Set

The Center Point Town Council will conduct its October meeting Saturday, Oct. 9, at the town hall, beginning at 9 a.m.

The adoption of the proposed 2011 budget is on the agenda.

All residents are encouraged to attend.


The Clay County Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Wabash Valley Community Foundation, will host the third Harvest Hoedown Saturday, Oct. 9, at the Clay County 4-H Fairgrounds.

The event will feature a barbecue dinner served by Pappy's Bar-B-Que, from 4:30-7 p.m.

Cornhole tournaments will take place and organized children's games with prizes are scheduled. A silent auction will also take place and live music by Country 90 Proof and campfire are slated.

Tickets are $15 per person and $5 for children 12-under and may be purchased in advance at any Riddell National Bank location.


Teens for Liberty Generation Joshua Club will host a public debate between Democrat Charles Hear and Republican Lee Reberger, candidates for Clay County Prosecutor, in October.

The event will take place at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 12, in the meeting room at the Y of Clay County, 225 E. Kruzan St., Brazil.


A fall political forum has been scheduled for 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 13.

The Clay County Chamber of Commerce and Clay County Farm Bureau will sponsor the event.

All candidates are invited to the forum, which will take place at the Clay County Fairgrounds.


The Lost Creek Conservation Club will conduct its 2010 .22 Rimfire Rifle Competitions Sunday, Oct. 17.

Practice sign-ins will take place from noon-12:15 p.m., with competition beginning at 1 p.m.

Tree Festival

The St. Vincent Clay Hospital Foundation will conduct the seventh "Festival of Trees," from 6:30-9:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 13.

The event will take place at the Clay County 4-H Fairgrounds.
