GREENWOOD -- The Northview boys' tennis season came to a close in Tuesday's Center Grove Regional as the host squad defeated the Knights, 5-0.

"Center Grove was just too talented and too strong for us," coach Craig Cook said. "Their program is amazing and each and every year is a state title contender."

The best match of the evening came from the Knights' No. 2 singles player, Caleb Mershon, who battled to the end before falling in a 6-4, 6-2 decision.

"Caleb Mershon played a very spirited match and battled Center Grove's No. 2 player to the very end," Cook said. "I was extremely proud of his play and of his fight."

Also in singles play, Carson Kleiber dropped a 6-0, 6-1 decision at No. 1 and Sam Miller fell in a 6-0, 6-0 contest at No. 3.

In doubles action, the Trojans earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 against the Knights' Joey Thomas and Cole Watts and scored a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2 against Northview's Dillon Reynolds and Bryce Britton.

Despite the regional loss, Cook was pleased with how his team competed while compiling an overall 14-3 mark in dual matches.

"I was also happy with way the rest of the kids competed. Our year was definitely a success," Cook said. "The only opponents we lost to the whole season were No. 7 Center Grove, No. 12 Terre Haute South and No. 17 Terre Haute North. The kids came ready to play every match and as a coach that's all I can ask and hope for."

This season the Knights were Western Indiana Conference champions, sectional winners, earned a victory in the Northview Invitational and were second in the Terre Haute Invitational.

The team was led by a successful group of seniors and will graduate Zach Kumpf, Devin Harvey, Kleiber, Mershon, Thomas and Miller from the 2010 squad.

"We are losing a great group of seniors that have accomplished a lot for this program," Cook said. "They have set the example for the underclassmen to model and work towards. They will be very difficult to replace. However, we still have a nice nucleus of kids that will contribute a lot for our varsity next year. Our success will be determined by the work our kids put in the offseason."
