Officials with the Clay County Sheriff's Department notified The Brazil Times Wednesday the Eel River Bridge on State Road 42 would be shut down.
CCSD Dep. Brad Hardey told The Brazil Times engineers with the Indiana Department of Transportation were shutting down the area sometime between 8:30-10 a.m., today, to have an analyst determine the damage, what route to take in fixing the damage and how long fixing the bridge would take.
Hardey said he was advised the shut down could last at least three days and possibly a week.
"It may be shut down until it's fixed," Hardey said.
In the meantime, Hardey said traffic would be re-routed.
In addition, he said the Clay Community School Corporation has already been notified of the situation and has taken the necessary steps to re-route bus traffic in the area.
Officials were dispatched to an accident that damaged the bridge Tuesday morning, involving a garbage truck.
There was no other traffic on the bridge at the time of the accident.
Hardey told The Brazil Times damages to the garbage truck were estimated at $13,000.
