NASHVILLE -- Brown County played host to the culmination of another strong cross country season by the North Clay Knights on Saturday.

The North Clay girls, paced by a runner-up finish by Emily Conrad, won the program's first team championship, outpointing Owen Valley by 18 points. The Knights scored 40 points and placed three runners on the All-Conference team with top-10 finishes. Edgewood placed third, one point behind the Patriots as Sullivan, Brown County and South Vermillion wrapped up the scoring.

In the boys' race, Josh Johnson claimed the individual championship, finishing the three-kilometer race in 10:42 as North Clay placed second to Edgewood by seven points.

The Colts scored 43 points to edge out the Knights' score of 50 points with Brown County in third-place followed by South Vermillion and Owen Valley. Sullivan did not field a complete team.

"This was the first ever WIC title for the North Clay girls," coach Chris Walker said. "They ran their best race when it counted. The boys had their best race of the season too but it wasn't enough today."

Walker was especially pleased with how Johnson wrapped up a breakout season.

"I think Josh surprised some people today. He's put in a lot of work over the last couple of years in the summer and it has paid off. He was basically the last runner on the team as a sixth-grader and now he is WIC champion."
