There was plenty of reasons to celebrate as Northview's volleyball team wrapped up the regular season at home before hosting sectional play beginning on Thursday night.
Fans and teammates honored five seniors as Kaylee Clark, Hannah Hayes, Lizzie Emmert, Darcy Bass and Kalyn Beil played their final regular season home match. Coach Scott McDonald was also presented a banner by Clark and Hayes after earning his 100th win earlier this season. Both Clark and Hayes are also part of that particular Century Club, which will likely be a very illustrious group as the seniors averaged more than 25 wins over each of their four years.
Not to be forgotten either was Alexus Bex, who was celebrating her 16th birthday and everyone involved got to celebrate the Knights' 20th-win afterwards, a 25-20, 25-11, 25-13 victory over Danville.
"It was a great night for us and the volleyball program," McDonald said following the victory. "The 100-win thing kinda caught me off guard. The seniors, Kaylee (Clark) and Hannah (Hayes) have been with me since I started (as the Knights' coach) and I told Darcy (Bass) that she's gone from diapers to spandex since I've known her and Lizzie (Emmert) and Kalyn (Beil) have been a big part of what we've accomplished here. Just a great class and a class that kind of set the bar for the Northview program and to represent what we want, which is good people that do things the right way."
Hayes has missed much of her senior season following a knee injury, but she was afforded the opportunity to serve up a final point in her final high school contest.
"(Hannah Hayes) has meant so much to this program, it was a nice thing to see her get an ace and to be able to receive the ovation that she deserves," McDonald said.
"Kalyn has done well and Darcy has played well probably the last two and a half to three weeks," McDonald said. "She's passed very well and in that position we need to have someone that passes well and she's done a really good job. She's going to give you everything she's got."
Leading 19-13 after a tip by Emmert, Beil came to the service line and sent another ace past the Warriors. Riddell followed with another block and a kill and Bass polished the game off with a kill.
The final two games weren't as close as Emmert ran off a pair of aces as the Knights led 11-1 at the start. Danville closed to within 12-8, but Briana Cook had a pair of late aces and Alexus Bex added a kill. Northview led 22-9 at that point and Ashlen Buck served out the final few points in a 25-11 second game victory.
The final game of the evening was led by Riddell, who had a pair of early service aces and both Beil and Clark had kills as Northview got out to a comfortable 12-3 lead.
Danville got back within 13-7, but a tip from Emmert and kills from Clark and Riddell pushed the gap back to 21-10. Riddell finished up the victory with a pair of her nine kills and added one of her six blocks in the match to close out the win.
The victory improves the Knights to 20-13 to cap the regular season. Martinsville and Plainfield open sectional play on Thursday at 6 p.m. with Northview playing the second match. Northview Super Tickets will not be honored at the sectional match.
Next match: Northview (20-13 overall) hosts Class 4A Sectional 13 beginning on Thursday. The Knights play the second match against Mooresville following the Plainfield vs. Martinsville game at 6 p.m.
