She was born June 2, 1920, in Anthon, Iowa, as the daughter of Carl and Florence Coon Smith.
Following high school, she worked as a teacher and eventually owned Colonial Boutique beauty shop in Beech Grove, Ind.
She was married to Charles A. Fortner, who survives.
She was a member of Annunciation Catholic Church of Brazil and a member of the Loyal Order of Moose No. 1009 Ladies Auxiliary in Terre Haute.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Bonnie Phillips, Mildred Forch, Dorothy Lage, Lilah Livermore and Vera Fisher, and brothers Wilbur Smith, Donald Smith and Raymond Smith.
She is survived by her husband Charles, children Jan Heavey, Karen Heidergott, Bev Hendricks, Denny Jerman, Marcia Slattery, step-children Bradley Fortner, Charles L. Fortner, and Steven Fortner, nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and other extended family.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 26, at Moore Funeral Home, Brazil. Visitation and funeral services will be Wednesday at noon at Calvary Cemetery, 435 W. Troy Ave., Indianapolis, with burial to follow.
