NMK heading to state finals

Sunday, October 24, 2010

For the 26th time, the Northview Marching Knights have advanced to the Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) Marching Band State Finals.

The band was one of 10 Class B ISSMA bands to earn a trip to the finals, which will take place Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium.

The Marching Knights competed at the Indianapolis Pike High School Semi-State site Saturday.

"The band was really good," NMK band director Bob Medworth said. "We're just practicing and getting better."

Northview will attempt to earn its third-straight ISSMA Class B title this year. But the competition will be difficult.

Joining the Knights in the state finals this year will be Greenwood, Bloomington North, Floyd Central, Jasper, North Side, Concord, Northridge, DeKalb and Goshen.

In the most recent www.indianamarching.com poll, the Marching Knights regained the top spot among Class B bands, followed by Concord, Greenwood, Goshen, Jasper, North Side, Plainfield, Northridge, DeKalb and New Castle Chrysler.

Of the ranked bands, Plainfield and New Castle Chrysler missed the state finals' trip.

Historically, the Marching Knights have won back-to-back state titles three times, winning in 1993-94, 1998-99 and 2008-09.

The band, however, has never won three consecutive state titles. The closest it came to that achievement was during the 1998-2000 run, coming away with two titles and one second-place finish. In addition, the band placed second in both 2006 and 2007, only to win state titles in 2008 and 2009.

If the Marching Knights come away from Saturday's contest as the top-ranked Class B band, it will be the program's 10th title as the program also won a Class C title as Brazil High School. The last Class B band to win three-straight titles was Greenwood, coming in 1995-97.

"I feel really good about us," Medworth said. "By next Saturday, I think we'll be real good."

Meanwhile, the Clay City Imperial Regiment competed in the Franklin Community High School Class D Semi-State Saturday, but did not advance to the state finals.

Class D bands advancing to the state finals this year included Orleans, Eastern (Greentown), Northwestern, Paoli, Lewis Cass, Springs Valley, Forest Park, Mater Dei, North Posey and Southridge.

Class B performances are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., Saturday. The Marching Knights are set to perform at 10:26 a.m.

Ticket prices are $20 for adults and $18 for students 3-18-years-old. Children 2-under will be admitted free.
