INDIANAPOLIS -- It wasn't what they were hoping for.

On Saturday, the Northview Marching Knights competed against nine other bands in the 2010 Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) Class B State Finals.

The Knights placed fifth overall, with their performance of "Symphony in One Color."

Greenwood won the 2010 Class B title. Goshen was second while Concord was third and Jasper came in fourth.

Placing sixth was Floyd Central, followed by Northridge, DeKalb, North Side and Bloomington North.

The fifth-place finish was only the second time the Marching Knights had placed fifth, with the other finish coming during the 2001 season.

Greenwood's last state title took place in 2007. Northview and Greenwood have shared the past five state titles.

Despite the fifth-place finish, NMK band director Bob Medworth said he was pleased with the band's performance.

"I thought they were great. Everybody associated with us thought they were great," Medworth said. "Everything was better (than semi-state). Everything clicked. I thought it was great."

NMK assistant director Ruth Ann Medworth agreed.

"I thought we did pretty good," she said. "But you have to have a little luck."

Other champions Saturday included Western in Class C, Springs Valley in Class D and Avon in Class A.

"This is another one of life's lessons," Bob Medworth said. "You've got to do your best and keep your chin up."

He added he hoped the students understood winning a state championship isn't the sole reason to be involved in music, but rather for the fun and friendship.

"We don't do this to win," he said. "That's not the reason we're in marching band."

This was a great time, I enjoyed all the kids and was very proud of them and thought they were a class act! Way to go Knights.... The best thing about lifes ups and downs is the lessons we learn from them and having that knowledge to keep with and use as needed. NMK You Rock!!!

You have made this community deeply proud. Not only have you learned to execute and perform a magnificent production flawlessly, but you also demonstrated that you learned character, dignity, modesty, unity, professionalism and how to conduct yourselves properly no matter the outcome. How could we be anything but very proud of you? Any way you slice it, you'll always be FIRST to us and a whole lot more!

How does a Band ranked first for almost the whole marching season place 5th? Time to move on and take control of DCI Mr. Med. Indy is calling.

What a legacy!
