With so much focus on the state, national and Clay County Prosecutor races, positions in two local townships were also decided Tuesday night.

In Brazil Township, the trustee position was up for grabs after incumbent Marcia Tozer lost to Vickie Lawhorn in the May Primary Election.

Lawhorn, a Democrat, faced off against Republican Thomas (T.J.) Sneddon and Independent candidate Linda Tozer-Smiley Tuesday in hopes of becoming the new Brazil Township Trustee.

However, Sneddon came out on top with 1,024 votes, while 636 ballots were cast in favor of Lawhorn and Tozer-Smiley came away with 224 votes.

In Sugar Ridge Township, only one candidate came away unlucky following Tuesday's election.

Four candidates -- incumbent Democrats N. Rosella Parks, Donald L. Ream and Tommy Joe Zurcher, along with Republican candidate John H. Nicoson -- fought for the three positions on the Township Board.

Nicoson will become the newcomer on the board as he gained 214 votes, while Ream and Zurcher retained their positions with 215 and 212 votes, respectively. Parks fell just outside the top three, tallying 196 votes.

With all other township races (All of Cass, Dick Johnson, Harrison, Jackson, Lewis, Perry, Posey, Van Buren and Washington, along with Brazil Township Board and Sugar Ridge Township Trustee) having no more candidates than the number of respective positions available, each of the individuals on the ballot were elected and all winners will begin their four-year terms on Jan. 1, 2011.
