Prior to the Nov. 2, midterm election, The Brazil Times conducted three online, non-scientific straw polls.

Based on percentages from those straw polls, it appears Clay County voters were fairly accurate in choosing who won the Tuesday elections.

For example, in the race for United States Senator, Republican Dan Coats won all three straw polls by a wide margin. He received 51.3 percent of the vote in the final straw poll compared to 38.5 percent for Democrat Brad Ellsworth.

In the final tallies from Tuesday, Coats finished with 55.42 percent of the vote while Ellsworth garnered 38.88 percent.

Likewise, in the race for United States Representative District 8, Republican Larry Buschon won all three straw polls by significant margins. He received 61.5 percent of the vote in the last straw poll while Democrat Trent VanHaaften tallied just 24.8 percent.

In Tuesday's election, Buschon finished with 61.67 percent of the vote compared to VanHaaften's 32.72 percent.

At the local level, Republican Toni Carter won all three polls for Clay County Council District 3 over incumbent Dolores Johnson, a Democrat.

In the third poll The Times conducted, Carter received 64.3 percent of the vote, while Johnson tallied 35.7 percent.

In Tuesday's election, Carter managed to obtain 62.76 percent of the vote compared to Johnson's 37.24 percent.
