He was born Dec. 12, 1915, in Parke County, Ind., as the son of Oscar and Vallie Mitchell Summers.
He left school to begin working in the family coal business.
Howard married Frances Mercer Feb. 24, 1940, in Brazil. Together, they farmed and raised Shorthorn cattle in Clay and Parke counties until he was 92.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Frances Marie Summers June 25, 2008, and sisters Opal Ellis and Ethel Green.
He is survived by sons Eugene Summers (Brenda), Reelsville, David Summers (Kanene), Lebanon, Ind., and Don Summers, Brazil, grandchildren Kara Donner, Lebanon, Laura Minor (Jesse), Reelsville, Kyle Summers (Carrie), Noblesville, Gena Brock (Adam), Otterbein, Ind., Justin Summers, Lebanon, Jason Summers, Brazil, and Kelsie Chilton (Shawn), Brazil, nine great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Marjorie Adamson (Fred), Brazil, and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 11, at Moore Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Friday, with Pastors Bob Kumpf and Myron James officiating.
