Rural accident results in death

Thursday, November 18, 2010

A single-vehicle accident in rural Clay County Thursday evening resulted in the death of one person.

Details were sketchy at press time, but Clay County Sheriff Mike Heaton told The Brazil Times the department was investigating the accident, which took place on Poland/Bowling Green Road, at approximately 7:40 p.m.

According to Heaton, it appeared the vehicle, a pickup truck, went off the side of the road and struck a tree.

Heaton said it was believed the vehicle continued before striking another tree and flipping onto the driver's side.

Heaton said there were only two occupants in the vehicle.

One of the occupants, who remained unidentified at press time pending family notification, was pronounced dead at the scene by Clay County Deputy Coroner Amy Solomon.

Heaton said the other occupant of the vehicle was transported to Methodist Hospital via Lifeline.

He said he was unsure of the type of injuries the transported occupant, who also remained unidentified pending family notification, had suffered.

Heaton said the accident is still under investigation.

Other agencies assisting at the scene included Indiana State Police, Clay County Search and Rescue, Poland Volunteer Fire Department, Bowling Green Volunteer Fire Department and TransCare.

The curves in that area are pretty dangerous when it's dry .. I can't imagine traveling that road after it's rained or snowed.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of these victims.

I'm so sorry for the families of these folks. My family also travels that road because of the bridge closure on SR 42. I am very concerned for their safety.Perhaps the state will move quickly to re-open the bridge so that fewer people will have to travel Pol/BG Rd.

I know this family and they have had to endure several hardships the past couple of years. They need EVERYONE'S prayers during this time of grief.
