Northview grad, Akers, leads Blue Knights past Vincennes University

OLNEY, Ill. -- The Olney Central Blue Knights extended its win streak to five games this weekend and won a thrilling decision against visiting Vincennes University, 81-77.

Northview graduate and Blue Knights' sophomore, Austin Akers was clutch down the stretch for OCC, hitting a free throw to open the extra session with a free throw that gave the Blue Knights their first lead since the six-minute mark of the first half, 70-69.

Terre Haute South grad, John Michael Jarvis, answered a bucket by the Crusaders with a three-point play to put OCC ahead 73-71 with 4:07 left in overtime.

Vincennes would come back to take a 77-76 advantage on two free throws with 1:13 left, but Akers responded with three late free throws with under a minute left to put OCC up 79-77 and Jarvis followed with two more shots from the charity stripe to ice the game.

In regulation time, Akers tied the game with 12.5 seconds left when he knocked down a 3-pointer to knot the score at 69-all.

Akers played 41 out of a possible 45 minutes in the game and scored 20 points to lead the Blue Knights. He hit three-of-eight 3-pointers and added five rebounds and three assists in the win as Olney improved to 5-3 as Vincennes dropped to 6-3.
