The North Clay eighth-grade boys' basketball team split a two-game series against Otter Creek Middle School. Otter Creek won game one. 47-31, but North Clay rebounded in the second to win, 35-26. The first game turned into a glorified three-point shootout, while the second was a defensive struggle with many fouls.

Game one started out well for North Clay as Gaddis Baysinger scored on an early lay-up, drawing a foul as the whistle blew. He made the free throw, completing the three-point play. Baysinger had three points and a rebound in the first game.

Things became very exciting quickly late in the first quarter when Knight Joe Ball connected on a three-pointer with 30 seconds left in the period.

Ball scored eight points in game one to go along with three rebounds.

However, the Knights' celebration didn't last long as Otter, Bryce Carpenter came back with a three of his own. The Otters were able to quickly recover the ball right after, and Carpenter hit another three as the buzzer rang loudly throughout the court.

Even though Ball helped bring the Knights' point total up himself, North Clay was still down at halftime, 22-15.

On the bright side, North Clay had very even scoring in the second half. They scored eight points in each of the final two quarters.

The Knights were only down by six after the third at 29-23, but in the fourth quarter, they had some defensive breakdowns to give up 18 points to the Otters.

A total of six threes were made as North Clay fell, 47-31.

Jacob Harden had eight points and Cade Newton had six in the first game. Gabe Rogers scored four points for the Knights, and Nick McCollum added to the total with two of his own.

North Clay had some things to work on for the second game, but they did an excellent job of coming back to get the victory in game two.

It was clear from the start that game two wasn't going to be a score fest like the first one. The leading scorer on either team had a miniscule nine points. North Clay played well defensively as it held the Otters to just over six points a quarter, including just one in the second period.

Even though their defense played well, the Knights were still down at halftime, 16-15. The Otter Creek lead evaporated quickly when Kade Carter made a pair of free throws to give North Clay a one-point lead.

Carter had eight points in the second game.

North Clay held on to that lead throughout the game to give the Knights a 35-26 victory.

"In the second game, those kids played great," Knight head coach Shawn Hughes said. "They played together, they played well. In the second half they executed their plays a lot better. They were extremely aggressive."

Blake Mershon led the way with nine points, Austin Russell had four, and Antoney Bryan had three. Five Knights scored two points in the second game: Seth Payton, Paul Dickison, KJ Thomas, Kurtis Yocom, and Nick McCollum. Mitch Thomas contributed with a point.

The eigth-grade is 2-3 in "A" games and 3-0 in "B" games.
