SPENCER -- The Northview wrestling team hasn't shied away from tough competition early in the season, squaring off in a dual match against Bloomington South to open the year and then winning two of five matches in a stout, Westfield Great Eight Tourney on Saturday.

The upper weight classes carried the Knights to some big points in those matches and on Wednesday, they sparked Northview to a 54-24 win on the road at Owen Valley.

Coming off championships by Larry Shaffer and Aaron See on Saturday as both went 5-0 in the tourney, both competitors earned victories against the Patriots.

See went up early at 215 pounds against Owen Valley's Mike Hill, building a 7-0 lead into the second period before dropping the Patriots' senior via fall in 3:35.

"Aaron (See) had a great showing on Saturday, he wrestled really well. We thought it was going to be a tough day for him, but he ended up going 5-0 and we're really proud of him," coach Dan Mikesell said. "He came through again for us tonight. Our upper weight classes seem to be good."

Beau Judd was another winner via fall as he wasted little time in pinning Corbin Terrell-Knapp at 285 on Thursday.

"I'm glad to see Beau (Judd) bounce back and have a good night," Mikesell said. "He struggled a little bit Saturday with his asthma, he got behind in a couple matches and couldn't pull them out and he had two, quadruple overtime matches. That's a lot of work for a heavyweight."

The middle weights were also pivotal as Northview opened with a forfeit win by Trey Boor at 130, but trailed 12-6 after Owen Valley won at 135 and 140.

Baylor Girton got a four-match winning streak rolling with his pin at 145 pounds, which was followed by bonus point team wins by Brandon Mikesell at 152 and Brody Girton at 171 with Larry Shaffer knocking off Evan White via an 8-3 decision at 160 pounds.

"I thought some of our middle weight guys, 145, 152 and 171 really came through for us and Larry (Shaffer) came through for us (at 160)," Mikesell said. "That kid (Evan White) is probably one of their best wrestlers, so that was a good win for Larry. He wrestled really smart and showed him he's improved since last year."

Northview led 39-18 after Judd's win at 285, but Ryan South continued the run by claiming a 23-second pin over the Patriots' Cody Major at 103 pounds. Caleb Nicosin followed up with another fall at 112 to push the lead to 51-18 and essentially put the match out of reach.

Owen Valley rebounded with a win at 119 in a freshmen battle between Northview's Shane Ryan and the Patriots' Devin Broukal.

The match looked as if it might end on a downward trend for the Knights as Skyler Hall fell behind 6-0 in the first period. However, Hall answered back with a reversal to get within 6-2 and pulled off a barrel roll to earn back points and claw within 6-5 heading to the final period.

"That's a little trick of the trade," Mikesell quipped. "It's not the highest percentage thing, but if someone is really clamping down on you hard, it'll work."

Hall used that momentum heading into the final period and claimed a 10-6 victory, narrowly missing a pin over Will Newforth at the final buzzer.

"I was real happy with Skyler (Hall's) effort there at the end, getting down 6-0 and coming back," Mikesell said. "We got a little lucky, one of their kids missed weight so that was a free six points for us, but we'll take that when we can get it. There were a couple of matches that I think we can turn around. Jesse Miller got caught, he was winning, I think he can turn that around. For the most part it went about how I thought it would. We might have wrestled a little better than we did on Saturday."

Northview will host its annual invitational on Saturday beginning at 8 a.m.
