MOORESVILLE -- Despite a limited lineup due to injury, holiday vacation and a forfeit for missing weight, the Northview Knights were still able to place eighth at the Mooresville Holiday Classic wrestling tourney on Wednesday afternoon.
The Knights placed four wrestlers in the top-five, including a runner-up finish by Aaron See at 215 pounds and a third by Beau Judd at 285.
"I'm happy with some individual performances for sure, but I don't think some of us wrestled up to our potential and the team obviously didn't finish as well as we could have at full strength," coach Dan Mikesell said. "For Aaron (See) to get second, for Beau Judd to get third is excellent. Larry Shaffer got fourth and that bodes well for those individuals."
The Yorktown Tigers, ranked sixth by Indianamat.com, put forth a dominating performance over the two-day tourney, winning four weight classes and placing 11 wrestlers in the top-three overall. Castle's Welch family also had a big day for the second-place Knights as both Doug Welch (152 pounds) and Chad Welch (160) won by either technical fall over pin in each of their matches on the way to titles. The youngest of the brothers, sophomore Luke Welch, dropped a narrow 1-0 decision to Yorktown's Chandler Carroll in the final.
Northview's See, reached the final by defeating Yorktown's 15th-ranked Scott Neff by a 6-2 score.
In the championship match, See missed on a couple of early takedown attempts and Jennings County's ninth-ranked Iyan Bass took a three-point lead late into the match. See climbed within striking distance in the third period, but See wasn't quite able to get the necessary points to knot the match in a 9-6 loss.
"I thought it was a very respectable match, (See) wrestled pretty well. He probably should have cut the kid a little bit sooner maybe," Mikesell said of late match strategy. "Another 20 seconds earlier and maybe we could have gotten a takedown and a stalling to tie it up, but for the most part he wrestled pretty well, just a few things to tweak and to work out, but that's a state caliber kid that he wrestled. He beat a ranked kid to get there so Aaron's wrestling right up there with some of the best in the state."
Judd squared off with 15th-ranked Mark Collett of Jennings County in the semifinal, but fell short in a 2-0 decision to send him into a third-place battle where the Knights' senior put Whiteland's Nick Peavler on his back in 2:02.
Caleb Nicosin received a first round forfeit and defeated Plainfield's Corin McKee 3-0 in the quarterfinals before a loss to champion, Schuyler Phillips of Yorktown. Nicosin had a shot at fifth-place but lost 6-1 to McKee in a re-match.
Skyler Hall and Baylor Girton were each sixth and Brody Girton claimed seventh at 171 pounds with a pin in 1:11.
Afterwards, felt that his Knights could perhaps have finished a little bit higher in the team standings with an extra victory or two individually.
"A couple kids need to find ways to maybe beat some better kids," Mikesell said. "They are at a plateau where they are beating some of the above average kids, but just can't quite figure out a way to beat kids that are a little higher caliber, but we'll get that figured out."
The Knights will travel to the Columbus East Six-Way on Jan 8.
