ELNORA - The Clay City Eels played their second game of the Graber Post Buildings Classic Wednesday afternoon after a tough loss Tuesday against Forest Park. The Eels couldn't rebound from the loss as they fell to the Washington Catholic Cardinals, 49-32 Wednesday.

Clay City quickly found themselves in a big first half hole as Cardinal senior Matt Stuart scored seven early points to help put Clay City in a 9-1 deficit going into the second quarter.

The only Eels' point in the first quarter was scored on a free throw by senior Josh Decker. That would be Decker's only point of the game.

"I thought we came out flat," Clay City head coach Vance Edmondson said. "I don't think we quite fully recovered from yesterday."

In the second quarter, the Eels started to hit their stride. After committing seven turnovers and scoring just a single point in the first quarter, Clay City committed just one turnover and scored nine points in the second quarter.

A key difference in the game was both teams' shooting percentage. Washington Catholic connected on a very respectable 51 percent from the field Wednesday, while the Eels made just 26 percent of its shots.

Clay City continued playing well in the third quarter, including junior Ben Denker, who had five points and a rebound in the period.

Denker ended with eight points and two rebounds.

After three quarters, the Eels still had a fighter's chance being only down by seven, 28-21. However, in the fourth quarter, the game fell apart for the Eels.

After giving up 28 points in three quarters to the Cardinals, the Eels surrendered 21 in the fourth. They also committed seven turnovers in the final period of their loss.

Senior Tyler Bridgewater scored 12 points Wednesday afternoon. Junior Tyler Allen and senior Justin Rodgers each added four of their own points to the total. Finally, junior Jake Tiefel scored three points in the loss.

Clay City plays today, at 3 p.m., for the seventh-place game of the tournament.
