BLOOMFIELD -- The Clay City Eels played the final two games of the Toby Yoho Classic at Eastern Greene High School without leading scorer Carmela Roeschlein, who suffered an ankle injury in the second contest of day one.

However, the Eels were able to split a pair of contests, falling 47-30 to Class 3A Brown County and defeating Cloverdale 49-23.

Clay City opened the second day of the tourney with a win over the Clovers thanks to some sharp shooting at the free throw line (18-of-22) and a big game from Madison Booe (15 points).

The Eels actually got off to a slow start against Cloverdale, trailing 10-8 after one period, but found their rhythm in a 20-point second quarter to take control of the game.

Booe was a big reason for that as she knocked down a trio of 3-pointers and hit four-of-six from the free throw line. Abby Reed was perfect from the charity stripe (six-of-six) and collected 10 points. Brielle Drelick got a strong day started by tallying six points along with Callie Dayhuff with Allie Miller scoring five. Kylee Truax, Danielle Gossage and Michaela Riggs each had two in the win.

In the final game of the day, Clay City ran out of gas under the fourth quarter pressure that Brown County applied.

The Eels trailed just 24-20 at halftime, but the Eagles were able to outscore Clay City 13-2 in the final quarter to pull away to the 17-point victory. The Eels got 18 points from Drelick in the loss.

The Clay City Eels gave another strong squad a battle in Tuesday's second game of the Toby Yoho Classic at Eastern Greene High School, but a slow first half resulted in a 48-42 loss to a 9-2 Brownstown Central squad.

The Lady Eels fell behind 30-16 at halftime, but as they did against Bloomington North earlier in the day, Clay City came out with a superb third quarter.

Clay City used a 9-0 run to cut the lead to 30-25 and later, Miller nailed a 3-pointer and Abby Reed converted a three-point play to knot the score at 34-all with 1:11 left in the period.

Carmela Roeschlein scored eight of her 18 points in the period as Clay City outscored the Braves 18-4 to tie the score heading into the final period.

Brownstown's Sammie Bane scored five straight points to open the fourth quarter to give the Braves a 39-34 advantage before the Eels clawed back to within one point on two different occasions.

The Braves missed several free throws that could have extended the lead before Jenna Hackman hit a pair to put Brownstown up 44-40. The Eels got back to within two points with a pair of shots from the line before Bane scored the final four points for the Braves to cap the victory.

Roeschlein was forced from the game in the final few minutes with an ankle injury.

Reed had nine points for the Eels, Miller tallied five and had eight rebounds with Brielle Drelick scoring six to go with seven boards.

Clay City (8-6 overall) hosts Cloverdale this evening at 6 p.m.
