Turnovers plague Knights' JV teams in pair of losses

Northview's junior varsity basketball teams had three weeks between games over the holiday break and the rust was evident on Thursday night as Owen Valley handed the Knights a pair of defeats.

The Northview girls started strong, but faded over the middle two quarters of a 37-30 loss to the Patriots and the boys fell behind early and never recovered in a 39-23 loss.

Unlike their male counterparts, Northview's girls got their offense going from the start as Natasha Barrett tallied five of her seven points in the opening period while grabbing four rebounds. The Knights also got two points and three of Libby Deckard's five points in the opening period as Northview tied the Patriots at 11-all through one quarter of action.

Unfortunately, the offense began to stall in the second quarter as eight turnovers handcuffed the Northview effort. Owen Valley had no such issues as Sheldon Williams scored seven of her nine points and Kayla Richardson added a pair of buckets for the Patriots.

Owen Valley hit six-of-12 shots from the field in the pivotal second quarter as the Patriots opened up a 24-15 lead.

After the halftime break, the Patriots continued to roll with a 7-0 run to lead 31-15 before Barrett answered with two free throws and Cassie Weddle added a bucket to end the period.

Weddle was nearly the Knights' only offensive weapon down the stretch as she rang up eight of her 14 points on drives to the hoop in the final quarter. Lindsey Potter, saddled with foul trouble all night, added a late score and Deckard added a free throw for the Knights.

The Patriots had a balanced scoring effort that saw four different players score at least seven points.

The Northview boys started sluggish as Owen Valley ran off to a 15-4 lead with both David Parker and Ethan Sparks nailing 3-pointers. Meanwhile, turnovers were a problem for the Knights, who turned the ball over 17 times in the game.

Northview trailed 19-10 at halftime and a 3-pointer from Caleb Oldham pushed the lead to 22-10. A steal by the Patriots' Ben Allen resulted in a lay-up before Northview's Ethan Whitson scored. Owen Valley led 26-12 heading into the final quarter as the Knights hit just six-of-21 (28 percent from the field).

The Knights attempted to trap and pressure the Patriots in the final quarter, which resulted in some easy looks on offense for Northview. However, it had the same effect for the Patriots, who hit six-of-seven shots in the fourth quarter.

Both Sparks and Andrew Ward hit a pair of fieldgoals and the Knights got five of Craig Peters' seven points. Daniel Kimball tallied six points for the Knights and Dallas King added four with both Whitson and Devin Clark scoring two points.

The Northview girls are now 1-8 overall with a game on Jan. 11 against Cascade. The boys are 2-5 this season with a game on Jan. 14 against Terre Haute South.
