Both "A" and "B" North Clay eighth-grade girls basketball teams were able to capitalize on their opponent's mistakes and turnovers to cruise to a two-game sweep Wednesday evening in their doubleheader against the West Vigo middle school Vikings, 39-12 and 29-19.
In the first game, West Vigo gave the Knights free opportunities by turning the ball over 10 times in the first half alone. North Clay responded by outscoring the Vikings in the half, 17-3.
A key cog in North Clay's offense was Mikayla Rowan, who scored 12 points Wednesday, including seven in the first two quarters.
"Mikayla always has a good game," North Clay head coach Kevin Kumpf said. "It was a good chance to work on individual games tonight."
Although West Vigo gave them a slight scare in the second half, the Knights kept the pressure on by scoring 13 points in the fourth quarter to get the win.
In the first game, Mallory Smith scored six points, Brittany Fagg scored five and Whitney Halfhill added four of her own. Emily Conrad and Deaven McCrocklin each scored three points while Stephanie Ellingsworth, Abbey Timberman and McKenzi Kumpf contributed with two points each.
The second game was similar to the first. North Clay played excellent defense in the first half, only allowing nine points in the opening two quarters.
In the second half, excellent defense wasn't needed as much as North Clay's Shea Britton led her team by scoring six points in the second half, finishing with eight.
Britton's scoring helped propel North Clay to get a victory.
Ellingsworth scored six points for the Knights Wednesday night. Carli Gambill and Ramey Miller each scored four. Sydney Buell contributed with three points. McCrocklin and Hannah Minor scored two points each.
North Clay's girl's ("A" Team: 2-1, "B" Team 1-2) next challenge is January 17 at Cloverdale at 6 p.m.
